INTRODUCTION TO CRIMINAL LAW

This course is designed to give students an understanding of Canadian Criminal Law.

The course introduces students to major topics of study such as purposes of criminal law, the elements of criminal law, defenses to crimes, criminal sanctions, constitutional limits, charter considerations, parties to crime, judicial forms and arrest procedures.

The course will also enable students to see how criminal law operates within the structure of the justice system. Upon completion of this course, students will also be able to critically discuss general principles of law and will be encouraged to consider the law critically from both an academic and societal perspective.

CORRECTIONAL SERVICES & PENAL REFORM

This course is intended as an introduction to the corrections system and will provide an overview of current institutional practices, policies, and legal issues.

The course focuses on the relation of corrections to the criminal justice system, theories underlying correctional practice, and the role of institutions within the corrections system. Specifically, this course provides an overview of the field of corrections. It reviews the historical development of crime and corrections, sentencing, jails, prisons, correctional policies, agencies, prison life, and challenges facing correctional populations.

It will further explore the principles and practices of treatment accorded to offenders in various types of correctional settings. More specifically, the course will enable students to critically examine the serious disproportion of inmates who have been wrongly convicted and study the fallibility of the Canadian justice system. Students will also examine common procedural errors resulting in wrongful convictions and will be able to critically scrutinize new mandates that have been recommended.

INTRODUCTION TO WORKPLACE VIOLENCE

Regardless of where you work or what industry you work in, there is a potential for violence, regardless of the job.

This course helps all staff, including frontline workers, supervisors, managers, and owners, or anyone else with an interest in workplace safety, develop a clear understanding of what workplace violence is.

They will learn the consequences of workplace violence, recognize potential warning signs and disruptive behaviors, and learn preventive measures that can be taken.

Students will also gain a clear understanding of what policies and procedures should be in place, especially as it pertains to Ontario legislation, and they will be able to clearly indicate the benefits of implementing a risk assessment tool in the workplace.

Broken into three sections, there is both a focus on general office etiquette and on work etiquette for law professionals. The course covers etiquette terminology, workplace expectations and acceptable behaviours: appropriate business dress and grooming, verbal communication, telephone skills, time management, and general professional development. Students will also be able to understand generally acceptable work etiquette practices. This course can easily be incorporated into your organization’s training requirements, as outlined in your workplace policies/procedures.

STRESS AND CONFLICT MANAGEMENT

This course is designed to give students an understanding of the physical and mental changes produced by stress. The course teaches students to recognize the signs and symptoms of a person in crisis. From a law enforcement perspective, students will be able to identify the models of police intervention, understand the limits of police intervention, and describe how stress can impair a person’s performance.This course will enable students to identify the essential five conflict management styles and know how to select the most appropriate intervention. By the completion of this course, students will also be able to successfully identify basic criteria for effective communication in a conflict or crisis situation and will be able to demonstrate knowledge in the subject of proxemics.
